Hey guys, how’s everyone doing?
If you didn’t know yet… last weekend I got engaged! After four years together, my boyfriend Tomiwa asked me to be his wife and I said yes. It all happened so quickly and felt surreal at the time. But now I’ve had a week to process it, so I’m ready to answer your burning questions haha. Here’s the story of how we got engaged…
Last month a huge fashion brand contacted me to collaborate with me on a style blog post (I won’t reveal who the brand is yet as I’ll be publishing that post shortly 😉). I was so excited! It’s literally one of my favourite brands *hint, hint* and so I needed the photos of me styling their clothes to look really good. But finding the time to blog alongside working full-time has been quite tricky recently, so I delayed writing my blog post for the brand until I was able to organise a proper way to shoot the photos.
Around the time that the brand reached out to me, my friend Jesse – who so happens to be a photographer (she’s amazing, check out her work here) – slid into my Instagram DMs. She suggested we should do a photo shoot sometime! You’d think I would have accepted and asked her to help me shoot the photos for my blog post for this brand, but no… I delayed. I said something like I’m super busy these days and that I won’t have a free weekend to shoot until after Christmas! Little did I know my fiancé and the photographer were in cahoots. You’ll see why later.
When Tomiwa learned that I had practically declined Jesse’s offer to shoot photos of me, Tomiwa persuaded me to go ahead with the shoot. He told me every reason under the sun why: it will help you to get your blog post for this brand out sooner; it’ll be a good opportunity to get photos for Instagram and your other platforms; you won’t have to worry about new content for a while etc etc etc. I was convinced. I agreed to do the photo shoot and Tomiwa offered to drive me to and from the shoot location to save me time.
The day of my supposed blog photo shoot was a Sunday. So as normal Tomiwa picked me up and we went to church together. I guess in hindsight Tomiwa was a little more on edge than usual, but I put that down to him feeling bad for Jesse that we were running late for the photo shoot (sorry Jesse!). Shortly before we went to meet Jesse, Tomiwa convinced me to shoot one of my “nicer dresses” first. I did wonder why the order of outfits I wore mattered but I complied anyway, and I’m so glad I did! So essentially, I did a last-minute outfit change. That is why I was wearing that pretty orange dress in the photos lol (it’s only £13, thank me later!).
We arrived at the location of my blog photo shoot, Battersea Park in London. As we walked through the park hand in hand “looking for Jesse” for a little while, Tomiwa eventually led me to a quiet spot. Our surroundings were perfect, the weather was perfect. In that moment, everything was perfect. Then… without going into all the intricate details of the lovely mini speech Tomiwa gave, he finally asked Will you marry me? And I (apparently) shouted YES!
Throughout all of this, I felt like I was dreaming. I didn’t even realise that Jesse was busy snapping away photos of the whole thing from within the bushes! She even wore green to blend in more with the trees 😂🌳. I’m eternally grateful that she was there to capture the moment so perfectly.
To top it off, the proposal was followed by a surprise engagement dinner-party in the evening with some of our family and friends! *Cue my shocked face, happy faces and pure joy*
I couldn’t have envisaged a more beautiful way to get engaged. My fiancé really did so well!! I am so grateful to our family and friends also for pulling together and carrying out a wonderful surprise. God bless you all! ❤️💕
I’m looking forward to documenting the amazing journey of transitioning from a girlfriend into a wife, and of course planning a wedding by the grace of God 💍. Stay tuned for the FAQ blog post coming soon where I’ll be answering some more of your frequently asked questions e.g. how did I know I’m ready to get married, did I read any books before getting engaged etc. If you have any other questions in the meantime, feel free to drop them in the comment section below 🙂
God bless you!
