Marc Jacobs Gave Me A Makeover! | Velvet Noir Mascara Review

Hey guys, hope you’re all doing very well.

Last weekend I was invited to Marc Jacobs Beauty for a complimentary makeover and to try out products from their new Autumn 2017 collection. Pretty cool, right? #FunFact Marc Jacobs Beauty’s parent company Kendo also owns brands such as Ole Henriksen, Fenty Beauty and Kat Von D Beauty.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t too expectant when I got the invitation in the post for a few reasons. 1. Marc Jacobs himself has been surrounded by controversy in recent years due to his apparent obsession with cultural appropriation so I’m still giving him the side-eye to be honest🙄. 2. The brand isn’t exactly known for having a “wide range” of shades, particularly for people that look like me, so I was sceptical from the beginning.

Nevertheless, I went ahead to see what the fuss is about and I’m glad I did. I’ve only ever previously tried Marc Jacobs Beauty lipgloss so this was a totally new experience for me…

My consultant Gemimah was brilliant. She didn’t try and shade-match me with the darkest or ashiest shade possible; she listened to what I wanted; she made sure I was comfortable throughout; she was knowledgeable about all the products; she spoke about other brands in comparison to Marc Jacobs. I’ve seen my fair share of incompetent beauty counter makeup artists so I really was impressed!

Gemimah started off by cleansing my face with these amazingly soft makeup wipes that smelled of sweets. We were off to a good start 😂.

Next she used the Undercover face primer to act as a base for the makeup. It has a really nice coconut scent as it’s infused with 5 forms of coconut including coconut fruit full of skin-boosting vitamins, coconut water for hydration and smoothing, as well as coconut milk which helps to prime the complexion.

I really love the foundation she used on me. The Remarcable Full Cover Foundation feels lightweight and has amazing lasting power. I wore it from about 11am-8pm that day and it stayed put even on my oily skin. And a little goes such a long way, just one dot covered my entire face (I like a sheer-medium coverage), but this foundation is definitely buildable. This foundation oxidises slightly but I didn’t notice a major difference after some hours. Gemimah informed me that foundations can oxidise lighter as well as darker, I thought foundations can only get darker over time, but hey ho, you learn something new everyday. Lastly, this foundation is applied best with a flat top kabuki or buffing brush. All the application brushes she used on me by Marc Jacobs were so soft even though they’re synthetic.

For my eyes, we went for a daytime smokey look, although I’d definitely wear this at an evening function too. Whilst I’m not a fan of the price point of some high end makeup eyeshadow palettes, I must say, you really can see the difference in quality and that is partly what you’re paying for. The eyeshadows from Marc Jacobs Beauty are so pigmented! After wearing them on my eyelids for hours they were still really shimmery and didn’t look dull at all after long wear. Gemimah used the “Scandalust” Eye-Conic Longwear Eyeshadow Palette on my lids after priming with the Undercover Eye Primer.

It’s difficult to tell whether it’s the primer that made my eyeshadow last so long or the quality of the shadows themselves. Either way, it’s a great combination if you don’t want your eye makeup to budge all day.

We finished the look off with a mix of lip products (I love a glossy nude lip!). Gemimah used Poutliner “Oh Cocoa”, Le Marc Lip Creme “Mahogany” and Enamored Hi Shine Lip Lacquer “Sugar Sugar”. It started to come off after I ate a Krispy Kreme doughnut but hey… I expected that because of the gloss.

The star of the show is really the mascara for me. I received this complimentary from Marc Jacobs Beauty. Retailing at a questionable £22, you’re probably wondering what’s so special about it? Surely it’s just another over hyped mascara… well I was shocked when I put it on. I naturally have very curly eyelashes and I struggle to find a mascara that actually lengthens them to compliment the curls. The Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara is really impressive. It is very pigmented and creates a look that makes me appear to be wearing falsies! I’ll let the photos speak for themselves:

Full list of products used below and summary of my opinions on each:

Undercover Primer – loved this, very moisturising and smells lovely.

Remarcable Foundation – 86 Cocoa Deep – feels like skin! Good shade match for me too.

Remarcable Concealer – 7 – nothing to write home about, did the job. There are only 7 shades in this concealer which is disappointing.

#Instamarc Powder – 60 – wasn’t crazy about this face powder, made the foundation look slightly cakier but it probably just wasn’t a great shade match for me.

Lines & Last Night Air Blush – LOVE this blush, it’s a beautiful coral/pink/orange tone, really suits dark skin.

Brow Wow Eyebrow Pencil – Dark Brown – not a fan of the eyebrow pencil, I went over my brows with my own Rimmel London pencil as I prefer the darker shade and have more control over the pencil.

Undercover Eye Primer – seems to have made my eyeshadow last a super long time and stay extremely pigmented, love!

Eye-conic Eyeshadow – Scandalust – quite pricey but absolutely beautiful warm, autumn wearable eyeshadow palette

Highliner Blacquer – Sunset – I don’t usually go for coloured liner under my eyes but this surprisingly looked really pretty.

Velvet Noir Mascara – hands down my new favourite mascara for lengthening lashes.

Poutliner Lip Liner – Oh Cocoa – very soft and complimentary on my lips.

Le Marc Lip Creme – Mahogany – really pretty nude shade, goes very well with the shade below.

Enamored Hi -Shine Lip Lacquer – Sugar Sugar– not too sticky, I liked this a lot although it isn’t particularly long lasting.

Overall it was a great experience. My favourite items are of course the mascara, the eyeshadow and the nude lip. Oh, and good news! Marc Jacobs Beauty will be launching a new range of foundations in Jan-Feb 2018 with 50 shades. It is said to be a dewy finish with buildable coverage. You guys know that I’m typically more of a beauty-on-a-budget type of girl, so I won’t pretend that Marc Jacobs Beauty is the norm for me. However, I would honestly consider purchasing the mascara when mine runs out, as well as an eyeshadow palette as I am beginning to appreciate more the importance of having quality products over quantity.

Big thank you to Influenster UK for hooking me up with this consultation. Thank you to Gemimah at Marc Jacobs Beauty in John Lewis Bluewater for the excellent service. And thank you to The Han Aesthetic for capturing the moment!

    1. Thanks Gavin, glad you enjoyed! Yes indeed I had a great time… could get used to this lifestyle haha. Also, btw, I finally tried redbush tea. I had redbush & vanilla by Tetley and I really like it!
