As most of you will know by now, I’m engaged and I’m getting married next year by God’s grace. We’ve been fortunate to have a considerable amount of time to plan our wedding (well… a “long” engagement has its pros and cons, but that’s a discussion for another day haha). But regardless of how long one has to prepare for the big day, for the most part, you’ll find that planning a wedding is a bit of a mixed emotions affair. You’ll be so ecstatic that you’re finally getting married, but if you’re not careful, the sheer stress of it all can be enough to drive a couple insane. All of the build up to that one perfect day isn’t going to be without some stress, and there are definitely aspects of the wedding planning process that comes with conundrums for you to solve. Here are a few things to consider if you’re currently planning a wedding; you intend to plan a wedding one day; or you’re just here for the knowledge.
Who To Invite
Before distributing any “save the dates” and wedding invites, you need to establish exactly who you’re actually going to send them to. This is the first and most awkward part of planning a wedding. Before becoming engaged, you might have known exactly who you would want to be at your wedding. You might have even been thinking about inviting your friend’s friend just because you loved the idea of a big wedding. But I’ve really had to remind myself of the purpose of having wedding guests when deciding who to invite. Wedding guests are not there to just fill empty spaces and make your photos look nice. They are supposed to be people that you have genuine connections with; that sincerely wish you and your partner well; and have a vested interest in the success of your marriage (not people that you won’t see or speak to again after the wedding day).
Another issue with deciding who to invite is venue capacity. You might initially fancy the idea of having a big wedding for the sake of it. But all this will come crashing down when you realise what the price per head is with the venue, or with the external caterer you choose to use. The smaller you go, the more intimate the wedding will seem. The bigger you go, there is a misconception that the atmosphere and the photos/videos will be better. We personally decided not to have a small wedding due to the size of our families and the number of people that we genuinely love, and have played a part in our relationship to date. However my fiancé and I are still extremely passionate about creating a sense of intimacy throughout our wedding.
Entertainment At The Wedding Reception
The wedding reception is where you can finally let your hair down, and let any worries or nervousness that you might have had during the ceremony melt away. It’s a time for your guests to celebrate two people they know and love getting married. Whilst your guests may be excited for you, they still need to be highly entertained to remain happy and engaged at the reception. Entertainment can come in many forms. For example, you could have an entertainer/MC to play games with your guests and keep people laughing. But ultimately, I would say that the most crucial form of entertainment is the music. One popular conundrum you might be faced with in this regard, particularly if you’re planning a Nigerian wedding like myself, is the age old question… DJ or live band?
The live band offers a culturally authentic, LOUD, vibrant-sounding Nigerian wedding experience, and the sound of their instruments playing in harmony literally shakes your body. Whilst the DJ offers a modern, more diverse selection of music, with the ability to mix songs seamlessly and transition across several genres quickly. Both entertainers have their pros and cons. But if you do decide that you want to have both at your wedding reception, it’s so important that they are able to be professional and work well together, giving each other plenty of time to appeal to their respective audiences.
The honeymoon might be the part you’re most looking forward to, but it’s also the part that you’re going to have to fund last (in the sense that you’ll need some money left over after all of the wedding festivities to spend whilst you’re away). Some people would recommend looking at last minute deals to try and save some money. Although, I personally prefer the certainty and security of booking such an important part of your wedding experience well in advance.
You may also need to consider the time of year you are potentially travelling. For example, if you go to somewhere like Spain or the Canary Islands, you shouldn’t have to spend too much for a really lovely time. However, if your wedding isn’t in the summer, you may not be satisfied with the weather in such countries at that time of year, depending on your preference. Additionally, you’ll need to decide whether to book an all-inclusive package or whether to create your own honeymoon experience. I like the idea of a package because it takes away some of the stress of further planning and leaves you more room to relax with peace of mind that you’ll have plenty to do.
